If you are looking for a typical yuletide story, I can tell you that I don't have patience to write one, but what I do have is a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career in fandom. Skills that make me a nightmare for some types of readers.
Sorry, just had to riff on that. For yuletide, I wrote Angel/Demon Incest Porn with D/s powerplay overtones, lots of banter, and a wrapper of wingfic. The story was never going to be to everyone's taste, but for those that like that sort of thing, this story may be a thing that you like.

For myself, I received a wonderful story for Eliot in the Magicians. I feel terrible that I became ill right after Christmas, so I was not able to post about it earlier, but it's a lovely story of Eliot and Margo's first meeting.

This entry was originally posted at http://wickedwords.dreamwidth.org/65803.hon the story side, I cut about 2K words from the story, and now I feel like it makes sense. I need to write the rest of it, but it feels more doable now. Could be it's must a better day.
Aging, man. It can really suck.
I'm forever behind on my yuletide story, and seriously considering defaulting. This would be my first time, and while some of it is I just can't get myself to sit in the chair and do the work, I'm also distracted by crazy stuff happening in life: the layoff, the election, dad's recalled pacemaker, and now this. It's really a lot, you know? I need a draft by default day for me to feel comfortable continuing, so that's the goal for the week. We'll see what happens.
I really hope everyone else had a much better day.
So, as I am still unemployed, I went down Thursday on the train to my brother's house in Portland,. In the morning, I borrowed his car and drove down to my Dad's assisted care facility and took him in to the hospital for the replacement surgery. Everything went great, though an emergency ended up pushing out his surgery for a couple of hours. I took him back home, then I went back to my brothers, and today I took the train back to my house. I get a couple of days break, then I start up the thanksgiving road trips, which will take me through Sunday.
It's a long week, but it's okay. I already called and checked on Dad and while he has some pain, he says he's doing okay. He'll see the doc next week so that by the time I see him on Thursday again, he should be healed up enough to have gone back to his cardiac rehab exercise class. A working pacemaker is amazing.
Dear Yuletide Author,
Hi! Sorry to be late putting this up, and I am so glad you found your way here. I cribbed this from prior years, but if you are stuck, I hope this letter gives you some ideas for things you can write. If you already have an idea for one of the characters I asked for, go for it. I want you to have fun writing and not to stress it – I want you to enjoy yourself.
If you are looking for other ideas, I’m a character-driven, relationship focused story fan, so if you stick with that – from a small friendship story to epic romance – I will love it. I love all types of intimacy from gen to explicit erotica; my favorite kink is D/s, and I also like hurt/comfort, just not of the illness kind.
I love worldbuilding, and all of the fandoms I’ve asked for involve rich worlds to explore. You can also build yourself a new one with alternate histories and timelines, or turn it all into a steampunk version of the original universe! Feel free to bring in other characters if you want, including original characters; my selected characters should be the focus, but there are a lot of other people in the universe too.
Tropes I love: First times, teasing, banter, dark pasts, found families, self-realization, wistful regret, pining, old hurts, second chances, dreams, adventure, ass kicking, angst, exotic settings, outsider POV, wacky undercover situations, steampunk, horror, other worlds, whumpage, hurt/comfort, themes about friendship, trust and love. I'd also prefer a happy ending.
I do have some dislikes: heavy illness (cancer, AIDS, etc), pregnancy, public humiliation/embarrassment, death and permanent disability. I'm not keen on first person POV or all dialog stories, though I am fine with a story narrated by an original character, animal companion, or inanimate object.
Here's what I wrote in my original request with a couple of additional thoughts
Kate Daniels - Ilona Andrews - Julie
I'm really interested in exploring Julie's life and her relationships - not just the one with Derek or Kate, but other shapeshifters like Dali or her training with the shade of Kate's aunt. I'm caught up on the latest book, so anything that happens as an outgrowth of Kate's war with her father would be cool too. I love the universe and the character and would love to see Julie's life explored.
Case fic, Day-in-the-life, five things about Julie - all good.
The Magicians (TV) - Eliot
I was pretty shattered by what happened to everyone at the end of the first series, and the fact that Eliot is tied down to a woman he never chose and a land he had no interest in is horrific to me. I'd like something a little happier, either s pre or post-series Eliot is a possibility, or something with Eliot and Margo at any time you like. I love their relationship and would like to see more of it. The two of them picking up a third or fourth would be awesome.
Ghostbusters (2016) - Holtzman
I have a mad crush on Holtz and just like the other character-focused requests this year, I want to see more about her. Her background is a mystery, and I'd like to see that explored. I'd also like to see one of the other Ghostbusters attempt to matchmake her, only to find out she herself is the match. I'd love a little guns 'n romance story.
Enjoy writing your story and I'm sure I'll love reading it. All of the details are optional, and I’m happy to leave specifics up to you. Like I said, I love these characters and I'll love whatever you choose to write in any of these fandoms. I'm really looking forward to it!
In other news, I've agreed to do a fanfic documentary, and talk about my life in fan fiction before the internet. Should be a hoot, and I'll see if I can dig up some fanzines and letterzines for show and tell. I met the woman doing the documentary at Norwescon, which is just amazing to me as in my mind, it's such a straight up SF con. How the world turns.
In home news, the backyard cottage progresses. Work still sucks, but I am not as stressed out by it as I was; can't say the same for the spouse. We'll see what happens in the next month, once the buyout is complete.
Hope your weekend is a good one.
On the cottage front, we finally have the fire sprinklers installed! That means we need a plumber and the insulation guys in, and then we can get it inspected for final framing and cover. So the water issues have been resolved, which caused a 4 month delay in the project, but things have moved at last. Once Dad's house sells, we hope to put some of our own work into the finishes and get that wrapped up by fall. I have hope again!
For my dad's house, last week was my last weekend cleaning and repairing the place. My sister-in-law did most of the on the ground coordination, as well as boxing up all of the old junk, organizing last month's estate sale (which we all worked and did well at), getting a realtor in, and being on site for every single contractor we had out to the place. It was a huge undertaking, and if she hadn't been willing to bail on some of her substitute teaching opportunities, I don't know how we would have managed. She and my brother live an hour away from Dad's, so it was a pain in the butt for her to do stuff, and I am super thankful that she got it done.
Last looks this weekend, new carpet and vinyl installed Wednesday June 1st, official photos June 2nd, and the house is on the market. Dad's a little freaked by it and has been very hand's off about selling the house; he wants it done as soon as possible so he can feel more financially secure again. He's doing well, but I can see his inner kid a lot, especially now that his big sister passed. He's really emotionally vulnerable, and I am so glad he's living in assisted care now and has friends now to support him. He's doing much better than he was last year when he was living on his own. He'll feel a lot better once the house is sold, his HELOC paid off, and he doesn't have to worry about paying for water, electric, or the taxes for owning it.
And after it all I will get back to fandom again! Real life just sometimes does a meltdown, and coping is all you can do. See ya on the flip side.
So. Now I need to work on the vids, which will have to start with setting up an account. But that'll bea goal for another day.
Whoo-hoo!
